quel déterminant interrogatif se traduit généralement par who lorsque la question porte sur des personnes: quel est ce jeune homme? = who is that young man?; et par what dans les autres cas: quelle est la capitale du Togo? = what is the capital of Togo?Toutefois lorsque la question porte sur un nombre de possibilités que l'on sait restreint, on utilisera which: quel est le musicien français qui a composé ‘le Boléro’? = what French musician composed ‘Bolero’?; mais quel est le musicien français qui a composé ‘le Boléro’? Debussy, Ravel ou Poulenc? = which French musician composed ‘Bolero’? Debussy, Ravel or Poulenc?On remarquera par ailleurs que l'inversion du sujet dans les propositions interrogatives indirectes en français n'est pas reproduite en anglais: je me demande quel est son avis sur la question = I wonder what his/her opinion on the matter isquel adjectif interrogatif se traduit soit par what lorsque le contexte est vague et les possibilités infinies: quel musicien vas-tu écouter? = what musician are you going to listen to?; soit par which lorsque le contexte est spécifique et le nombre de possibilités limité: dans quel tiroir as-tu mis la lettre? = which drawer did you put the letter in? La première traduction est utilisée dans la langue courante, parlée ou écrite. La deuxième sera préférée dans une langue plus soutenue, surtout écrite.
